Happy Halloween!

An abandoned house in Ohio. More spooky, abandoned places here

Well, being back at school this week has kind of hit hard. I didn't get much work done over fall break (can you blame me?) which meant Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night were kind of killers--essays, applications and pages and pages of reading. Well, it's over now--just in time to catch the Halloween spirit that's been going around campus.

Tuesday night, my residential college threw its (biennial?) haunted house. I found it quite fantastic because I wasn't scared at all and it included remix versions of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus songs. The Master of the college went around handing us candy, so that made the 45 minute wait much better!

Today the Yale Symphony Orchestra is performing its midnight Halloween Show. Tickets sold out online in minutes, so I will probably spend that hour watching Goosebumps on Netflix (90s children's horror--classic) and pretending to do work.

Since I won't be seeing the Halloween Show (a Yale tradition!) and I'm not really one for costumes anymore, I thought I'd get into the Halloween spirit in some different ways. Enjoy!

Kittens in witch hats! Do you think Doc and Mack would go for some hat accessorizing? We used to have reindeer ears, and I always tried to put them on Harry, but he was never a big fan...

Witchcraft, assassins and ghost soldiers. Check out the ten most haunted castles.

The San Diego State baseball team has an annual Halloween game-- everyone plays in their costumes!

Now this is a Halloween party! (I really want to try those gummy brains!)

I didn't have time to carve a pumpkin this year--maybe next October. I really want to do a Kappa-themed one.

These Halloween pretzel sticks are so festive...and easy to make!

I'm loving these crop tops from Urban. here and here.

Halloween is as good a time as any to learn to read Tarot...maybe that's what I'll do.

Have a very happy and safe Halloween! See you in November.

Moments of October Break

I'm so glad my school decided to add an October vacation to its schedule. With midterms and everything, all of us seem to burn out right around this time and a couple days to catch up on sleep and do some laundry is very nicely appreciated!

I'm lucky enough to attend school so close to home. I spent the entire break with my family celebrating birthdays, running errands, eating bagels and simply enjoying time with each other. It was absolutely perfect.

Some of my favorite moments...

The tranquil ride back to New York. It was wonderful just sitting, listening to the radio and seeing all the colorful trees on the highway.

Seeing Cinderella's transformation on stage. I loved her golden gown.

Picking up Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets. My favorite time of the year is coming and I just love getting into the holiday spirit. All over the city we saw men on ladders hanging lights on trees.

Walking around the city in beautiful October.

Ordering in Chinese food with my grandparents. It's always nice to spend relaxing evenings with them.

Cuddling with these guys. On Saturday we adopted two rescue puppies, Doc and Mack. While we still miss Harry and think about him everyday, we are so happy to welcome these new dogs into our home and family.

More pictures of these guys to come. We are so in love.

I hope you are all enjoying the crisp, colorful season!

xx Marisol

life lately...

See more of this Pusheen the cat here

Well, it's already mid-October and we are in full-swing midterm season here at Yale. We are just days away from October break, which of course gets us thinking about the Harvard-Yale game and Thanksgiving break just a few weeks away, and then winter vacation two weeks after that. (But actually, my roommate and I were just discussing Christmas tree decorating). Before you know it fall semester is done and we are getting married and moving into retirement homes.

There's something about loads of work that make us all mentally time travel and look forward to better times--the weekend, the holidays, that full night of sleep that will happen sooner or later.
Meanwhile I'm totally blown away that we've already hit the half-way point with October. We haven't even put up our black and orange streamers in the common room! Also, Reginald "Reggie" MacDuff, the ghost we put up on our door, has fallen from his post and we haven't gotten around to putting him up again. Maybe today's the day.

In other news...

  1. My roommate and I are hosting our first soirée of the year. It will be "Witch and Wizard" themed and will take place on a Thursday night.
  2. It is taking place on a Thursday night because I happen to work on Friday and Saturday nights, in my college dining hall.
  3. My new job is pretty awesome (even though after 4 weeks of work I still haven't been paid...) and I am so glad to get to know the dining hall staff better! Feeding hundreds of hungry college students every day is seriously hard work.
  4. Because I work Saturday nights, I got a special behind-the-scenes look at our very special Inaugural Dinner. This past week was one grand celebration after another in marking the inauguration of Yale's 23rd President, Peter Salovey. Silliman College had a very special menu planned for all the students (date and goat cheese salad! macaroons! egg nog!), and while I was working the whole time and technically not allowed to eat on the job, I got to sneak a few bites.
  5. My official contribution to this grand fête was checking IDs and putting wristbands on students who are allowed to drink champagne. I am now a master at putting on those sticky non-removable wristbands.
  6. And because I was working most of the night, I wasn't able to attend the first few hours of the Inaugural Ball. This honestly didn't bother me that much because I don't really do crazy dances in overpacked tents anyway. However, I did have quite a few "Cinderella" moments when people in the dining hall kept asking me if I was "going to the Ball" and I had to say "no, I'm working late."
  7. Because I have this new job and because it is birthday season in my household, I seem to be much more lax about online shopping. I believe I have about 4 separate shippings to my house--though I promise they are not all for me! I also promise--I only bought half off sale items.
  8. My favorite purchase has to be some fall candles from Bath and Body Works -- I can't get over how wonderful Blackberry Spice smells. My roommate bought one over the summer and we just started burning it today.
  9. I now have to get back to studying, paper writing and Kappa things.
  10. But before I go, I share with you some fairly clever Halloween costume ideas. I really like the Candy Crush one.

October Goals

This October, I'd like to...

decorate a pumpkin
send Halloween cards through snail mail
listen to The Book Thief on tape
make my way through season four of The Vampire Diaries
finish midterm papers before the day of the deadline
walk the Brooklyn Bridge
dance the night away
always remember, "We do not need magic to transform our world.
We carry all of the power we need inside ourselves already." - J. K. Rowling

What do you want to do this October?
