review: The Great Gatsby

{source}

today was the first Saturday in a really long time that I didn't have to get up at a specific time to study, or attack some really long to-do list. today I slept, spent time with family, read a book at my leisure and ran some errands. I know these days will get rarer as I get older so I'm enjoying them now.

we saw The Great Gatsby today. I have been looking forward to it for a while--I loved the book, the movie has an incredible cast and with Jay-Z as executive producer of the soundtrack? oh wow.

the movie definitely met my expectations. I thought it was very well done--especially with regard to cinematography and editing. they really captured the thrill of the Roaring 20s.

the acting was okay. Leonardo DiCaprio was a fine Gatsby--but not a great one. many people are hoping he'll get an Academy Award for this, but honestly I don't think the performance was particularly exceptional. Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan played the part well, but it wasn't completely memorable. and Tobey Maguire playing Nick Carraway really annoyed me. Carey Mulligan is the only exception. I thought she made a fantastic Daisy Buchanan.

the music was a little disappointing. it got so much hype but honestly I think the selection could have been much stronger. I do however really like the idea of an era piece with contemporary music--all the Jay-Z tracks were a nice touch.

the setting and scenery were incredible. New York skyscrapers, the cars, the houses, the chandeliers. I can see why someone would want to see the movie in 3-D--the party scenes are quite a spectacle--but I thought the regular showing was perfectly fine!

In all, definitely see The Great Gatsby, but read the book first!

what did you think of the movie?
